On Kawara: Rules of Freedom, Freedom of Rules

Teacher’s Morning and Teacher’s Workshop

On Kawara: Rule of Freedom, Freedom of Rules is the first institutional solo presentation of On Kawara’s work in Asia and the first since his passing in 2014. This landmark exhibition presents his most iconic series spanning five decades, with a special section focusing on his trip to Hong Kong. The exhibition reflects on Kawara as both a global citizen and an artist-philosopher who bridged divides between the everyday and the metaphysical, simplicity and complexity, the present and the eternal, and ultimately, life and death.

This latest Teacher’s Morning invites the curator of the On Kawara: Rules of Freedom, Freedom of Rules exhibition, Ying Kwok to share their curatorial concepts and creative processes alongside an introduction to selected artworks. The curator’s sharing is followed by a Q&A session. Apart from exhibition and artwork highlights, participants will learn about the exhibition programmes exclusive to schools.

The afternoon Teacher’s Workshop is led by media artist and lecturer Phoebe Hui. In the three-hour session, Hui will explore the tension between rule-based systems and personal expression as a method to inspire creative engagement and reflection. Taking cues from On Kawara’s meticulous and meditative practice—his use of time, repetition, and data as both material and method—the workshop invites participants to consider how acts of recording, constraint, and daily routine can become poetic gestures. Participants will engage in exercises involving digital data logging, structured repetition, and self-imposed limits, transforming these variables into generative tools for creative intervention in educational contexts. Hui will share her experiences working with systems-based art and how such methods can be applied to foster mindful observation and innovation in the classroom.

Teacher’s Morning will be conducted in Cantonese, with simultaneous interpretation in English. Teacher’s Workshop will be conducted in Cantonese only.
