Fairytales: Selections from the Takahashi Ryutaro and M+ Collections (working title)

This exhibition presents highlights from the Takahashi Ryutaro Collection, the preeminent private collection of contemporary Japanese art. Dr Takahashi Ryutaro began collecting around 1997, capturing the wave of experimental and socially engaged practices that emerged after the collapse of Japan’s bubble economy in the 1980s. Informed by the student activism of the 1960s and his work as a psychiatrist, Dr Takahashi’s collection explores issues of social and individual psychology, sex and violence, and the hidden costs of economic prosperity. This exhibition places works from the M+ Collections in dialogue with icons of contemporary Japanese art, many shown in Hong Kong for the first time. Featured artists include Aida Makoto, Ikeda Manabu, Konoike Tomoko, Murakami Takashi, Nara Yoshitomo, and Yanagi Miwa.
