Cloisonne Workshop & Courses

The word cloisonné is derived from the French word Cloisonné, meaning enamel on metal, which is an ancient craft technique. It is an ancient technique in which craftsmen weld metal filaments to the surface of the metal and fill it with enameled material. The craft originated in the ancient Near East, where it was first used for jewelry and small, delicate ornaments. It was introduced to China in the 14th century (during the Yuan Dynasty) and was often used to decorate large objects such as bowls, plates, and vases. Cloisonné has since taken root in China, and the art has endured for many years. In 2006, it was inscribed on China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage list, confirming its high status.

Traditionally, cloisonné craftsmen would use silver wire, gold wire or flat copper wire to pinch design patterns, weld them onto the copper tires to form a solid and elegant spacer, and then fill them with a variety of colorful enamel glazes, such as sky-blue, sapphire-blue, dark blue, white, and grape-violet, which were then kiln-fired and shaped into an unparalleled work of art. Modern cloisonné craftsmanship, on the other hand, is more simple than complex, combining ancient craftsmanship with modern materials to evolve a simpler process, mainly used for flat patterns. Craftsmen use gold-plated or silver-plated aluminum wire to create creative frames, which are then filled with a solution of colorful enamel glaze and glue, seamlessly connecting the curved frames to create an everlastingly bright and lustrous artistic image.
