a | n gallery is pleased to present “Paper Veins: Solo Show by Huo Yun”, the artist’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. It will open from 11 Nov 2022 to 30 Nov 2022.

Huo Yun focuses on exploring the initial qualities of ordinary materials to reflect on today’s highly efficient world. He expresses a desire to return to nature as he ponders the essence of life and existence. After spending many years studying and working in Italy, he has incorporated different media, such as sculpture, mixed media on shelves and installation, to convey his artistic concepts. His works shows the symbiosis of materials and the language field so that deconstruct the East and the West, and reconfigure the relationship between then and now.

“Paper Veins” features thirteen groups of works created between 2016 and 2022. Twelve of them are mixed-media paper pieces on canvas. Sixteen pieces of ink on paper make up another group. Huo Yun abstractly maximized “paper" as an art language by stacking, crumpling, and shaping various mixed materials on canvas in accordance with their individual personalities. In addition to giving him a hint to move beyond a 2D surface and generate spatial fluctuations, the paper's texture also serves as a bridge between the material and his experiences.

As a new generation of Chinese artists, Huo Yun's artworks are nurtured by contemporary cultural tensions. Influenced by the Arte Povera during his stay in Italy, he loves to take the material as a vessel, traveling between being and non-being. He came to Hong Kong for exchange studies and participated in numerous exhibitions globally. Through the interplay of lines and forms transformed from his in-the-moment sensations, Huo Yun has created a harmonious rhythm to express his challenges and reflections.

The paper constructs stereoscopic works. Pure white is enriched by pleatings and folds. The works are gentle yet well-formed. Each slight twist allows one to physically experience the material’s raw radiance. Through this unique language, Huo Yun unifies the work and the individual into existence, subtly erasing all dualities, and ultimately presenting a silent state of emptiness.

Huo Yun studied choreography at the University of Bologna and received a first-class honors diploma in sculpting from the Bologna Academy of Fine Arts (Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna), Italy. In 2009, he attended the Hong Kong Baptist University's Department of Visual Arts as an exchange student. In addition to being nominated for the Italian National Academy Award, he has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Naples, Bologna, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Hangzhou. From 2013 to 2015, he served as a special lecturer in contemporary art appreciation and graphic composition at Beijing Union University.
