An intimate glimpse into the contemporary world of Kunqu and the struggles of a young man trying to preserve a fading art

Kunqu, one of the oldest existing forms of performing art in China, has once again risen to people’s attention after being recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2001.

My Next Step follows 28-year-old Kunqu artist Yang Yang over the course of several years. The last remaining young wusheng (martial arts) performer in his troupe, he has dedicated himself to the art since he was a teenager. Witnessing the glamour of the role fade and his peers move on one by one, he contemplates his options as he shoulders the responsibility of keeping an ancient theatrical form alive and relevant.

The documentary explores the complexities young artists face in contemporary China – how they perceive tradition, art, their dreams, their lives and themselves. Featuring excerpts from traditional and experimental Kunqu performances, My Next Step offers an intimate glimpse into the contemporary world of Kunqu and the ambivalence of a young man struggling to find a way to preserve a fading art.
