Veteran artist Chen Hsi-huang is the eldest son of renowned Taiwanese glove puppeteer Li Tien-lu – familiar to cinema audiences around the world for his appearances in Hou Hsiao-hsien film’s Dust in the Wind, City of Sadness and the biographical Puppetmaster.
This moving and beautifully filmed tribute to an ageing master and a disappearing craft, also offers a poignant look at the strained relationship between father and son, and Chen’s late-life search for recognition and a new generation of artists keen to learn and inherit his skills.
Features interviews with Hou Hsiao-hsien and actor Lim Giong, who played Chen’s father Li in The Puppetmaster.
