Hong Kong athletes’ impressive performance in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and other major international and regional sports events last year not only triggered a fad for sports in Hong Kong, but also generated strong public support for local athletes and sports development.

In recent years, Sino Group and its shopping malls have expended great effort to promote the city’s sports development and a sports culture in the community. Among the sports being promoted is breaking, which has been chosen to feature on the Paris 2024 Olympic sports programme as a new sport.

This June, Olympian City will be organising the “Hong Kong Breaking Team Qualifiers Round 1” in collaboration with the Breaking Division of the Hong Kong DanceSport Association (HKDSA). Athletes selected from the qualifier will represent Hong Kong in international breaking competitions and strive for Paris 2024 Olympics qualification for Hong Kong.

During the qualifier, the public will get to not only watch local breaking athletes in action, but also gain a deeper understanding of the culture, rules and techniques of the dance sport at Olympian City. They can also cheer on the competing athletes and be part of their “Road to Paris” journey.

Andrea Leung, Group General Manager (Marketing) at Sino Group, reiterated the Group’s active effort in promoting sports development in Hong Kong. Over the past years, various Sino Malls have worked with sports organisations on large-scale events to promote different sports. In recent years, the Group has committed itself to fostering the development of new sports, particularly new Olympic sports including breaking, skateboarding and 3x3 basketball. To this end, the Group has been providing support on multiple fronts, from talent training to organising competitions and promotions to the public. By so doing, it hopes to contribute to Hong Kong’s sports development and help local athletes win international recognition.

Olympian City Is Organising the 2022 Hong Kong Breaking Team Qualifier

Breaking is a technical dance where personal style plays a dominant role. With a long history and a unique culture, it has been chosen as a new sport for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris scheduled for 2024.

As a multi-cultural city, Hong Kong has a group of professional breaking athletes, who have set their eyes on the Olympics. They are supported by coaches, DJs and graffiti artists, who also play important roles in the breaking culture. The ultimate goal of these local talents is to earn recognition for their city in international competitions, and hopefully, the 2024 Olympic Games.

As part of its effort to support local breaking athletes, Sino Group is, through its shopping mall Olympian City, collaborating with the HKDSA’s Breaking Division to organise the “Hong Kong Breaking Team Qualifiers Round 1” on 12 June 2022. For Hong Kong breaking athletes, it will be a great step towards the Olympic dream. During the qualifier, contestants will come face to face on the battle ground at the Central Atrium of Olympian City 2, and showcase their power moves to rhythmic beats. The upbeat matches will be as emotionally gripping for the spectators as they are for the athletes.

The qualifier will feature 1-on-1 battles. Contestants will be divided into 6 groups, namely Bboy aged 13 or below, Bboy aged 14-17, Bboy aged 18 or above, Bgirl aged 13 or below, Bgirl aged 14-17 and Bgirl aged 18 or above. The 16 contestants who have the best accumulative results in the qualifier will compete for qualification for the Hong Kong team in this year’s open tournament with the 16 athletes selected in the previous open tournament. As for the public, they will be able to watch local breaking athletes compete in close range and experience the excitement of the sport, as well as express their support directly to the athletes who are making big strides on the “Road to Paris”.

Experience class to nurture future Bboys and Bgirls

Breaking is seen by some as “informal” as a sport. Its inclusion in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games offered a lot of motivation to many breaking athletes. On 11 June 2022, the day before the qualifier, Olympian City will be organising an experience class with various sessions, during which professional breaking coaches will teach children basic moves and techniques. Through giving them a taste of the sport, it is hoped to arouse the interest and unleash the potential of the young participants. The coach will also explain the rules, judging criteria and ways of appreciation so that the participants can better understand breaking as a professional sport and the breaking culture. Olympian Kids and S+ REWARDS members will be able to sign up for the experience class with loyalty points.

Nurturing 3x3 basketball talents riding on the Tokyo Olympics

Apart from breaking, 3x3 basketball will also be featured in Paris 2024, following its addition to the Olympic sports programme as a new sport during Tokyo 2020. With its roots in street basketball, 3x3 basketball has been increasingly popular. Like breaking, 3x3 basketball matches are also fast-paced and exciting to watch.

This summer (July 9-10), Olympian City will turn its Central Atrium into a 3x3 basketball court for the “Zurich Insurance (Hong Kong) Kids Basketball Camp”, an event designed for children to enjoy the fun of sports. The participants will learn 3x3 basketball moves and shooting techniques from professional coaches. To provide much needed opportunities for children to explore their potential, Olympian City will be inviting children of grassroot families to take part in the event. Olympic Kids can also participate using Kids Points. All participants of the camp will receive an athlete kit that contains a jersey, a size 3 SPALDING basketball, sports souvenirs and sanitising items.
