This May, Tai Kwun marks a milestone with ENCORE! – HKJC Celebrates Tai Kwun 7th Anniversary, a city-centre celebration of creativity, community, and connection. Anchored by Tai Kwun Gameboard, the site is set to transform into a playful landscape, where board games will stretch across the Parade Ground, pickleball takes over the Prison Yard, and moments of shared joy will unfold around every corner.
This anniversary celebration brings an exciting lineup of programmes designed to delight every visitor. From engaging guided tours that reveal the hidden stories behind Tai Kwun’s most Instagrammable corners, to explorations of the art galleries, hands-on creative workshops that spark imagination, and a fanciful street parade from the French May Arts Festival, Tai Kwun invites visitors to see familiar spaces in unexpected ways.
Enabled by The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) in partnership with the Hong Kong SAR Government, with the continuous funding and support from HKJC, Tai Kwun has grown from an architectural treasure into one of Hong Kong’s most beloved cultural landmarks—a place where heritage, arts, and everyday life converge. Over the past seven years, its storied gates have welcomed footsteps, laughter, and imagination, transforming history and arts into a living, breathing part of the city. This anniversary is both a tribute to that journey and an invitation to you – the Hong Kong public who have come in the millions since day one and who return regularly to catch our ever-changing programme, to keep playing a part in this evolving story.

The balustrades along the verandahs of Tai Kwun’s Barrack Block are a distinctive architectural element of this historic site. With this workshop, you have a chance to make and bring home your own mini-baluster, which also doubles as a candle holder!
To celebrate Tai Kwun's 7th anniversary, we are launching a special edition of the Baluster DIY Workshop. In this parent-child activity, you can explore different visual elements to make unique finishes. Create a sense of dynamism and vibrancy to your baluster by splashing colours across it, and add another dimension to your handicraft experience.
Additionally, this programme offers a unique architecture tour. Learn about the original construction and later restoration of the balustrades as well as broader issues about materiality, craftmanship, design and the meaning of the historic architectural compound. Workshop will be conducted in Cantonese.
A journey through time to the Belle Époque period, Le Bal, a street parade inspired by Renoir’s and Degas’ paintings, takes you to a whimsical world where people get together, dance, laugh and enjoy life.
The party is on! Celebrate the end of the day and dance the night away, as magnificent horse-drawn carriage, dancers, stilt walkers and acrobats enter the parade in a swirl of lights.
Le Bal is produced by Remue Ménage, a world-renowned French company, which marries visual arts, circus, dance and puppetry art.
Behind Closed Doors – a short documentary about Cantopop’s next generation
24.05.2025
In counterpoint to Tai Kwun’s last summer exhibition Soundtrack of Our Lives: Joseph Koo x James Wong x the Rise of Cantopop, 14 new-generation local musicians responded to the daunting challenge of developing their own cover versions of selected classics from the Hong Kong songbook of Koo and Wong, under the mentorship of Andrew Tuason, the acclaimed composer, arranger, producer and music director who served as Joseph Koo’s last musical assistant. Behind Closed Doors is a Tai Kwun Artist Development Programme, produced by Isabel Wong Tsui-wah.
This documentary film captures the creative journey of reinterpreting timeless musical classics, bearing witness to those profoundly moving moments when Hong Kong's music legacy passes to a new generation.
