Buildings are shaped by the professional demands, responsibilities, and standards specific to the work of the architects who design them. This exhibition highlights and visualizes these connections using the tools often used by architects in the act of design itself—diagrams, plans, models, photographs, and text. Collectively, these materials reveal various interpersonal relationships, organizational structures, and pedagogical, social, and economic systems at the core of much of the world’s architectural production.

Participating students have identified and researched multiple aspects of architectural professionalism that each speak to their individual interests as designers and researchers. Their ongoing work has been grouped into five main categories that capture the range of institutional, typological, and place-based conditions that have influenced architectural practices since World War II, including “Practice and Place,” “The Private and Public Nature of Practice,” “Teaching the Architect,” and “Architects and Other Professionals.”

Translating semester-long studies into charts, diagrams, objects, and images has been a complex process that in itself reveals the challenges of designing and constructing our built environments. This work has also helped us to better understand the particularities of architectural practice in Hong Kong and, at the same time, the nature of contemporary global architectural production more generally. Revisiting the past and its present effects may also shed light on future modes of design work. To that end, we hope this exhibition will appeal to not only to students of architecture and architectural professionals, but the public at large.
