Post-screening Seminar in Cantonese on 2nd November at Hong Kong Film Archive Speakers: Neco Lo Che Ying, Catherine Lam Two decades after Princess Iron Fan, the Wan brothers finally completed this landmark film of Chinese animation. The first feature film of Shanghai Animation Film Studio, it was a collaboration between the elite of the art circle both on and behind the scenes. Also adapted from the classic Journey to the West, the film follows the Monkey King of Flower and Fruit Mountain along with colourful mythological characters – including the Jade Emperor, the Four Heavenly Kings and Nezha – all designed by iconic graphic artists Zhang Guanyu and his brother. Adding to the unique aesthetics was the integration of Peking opera elements – including character and action designs, as well as music – which gave the film a strong Chinese flavour. Moreover, Sun Wukong’s facial makeup also established a strong foundation for future animation’s character designs.
