After the success of his theatrical feature debut Dahufa (2017), director Busifan spent seven years to complete his sophomore effort. Like its predecessor, The Storm ignited discussions in the mainland animation circle. Five years after its sinking, a merchant ship mysteriously reappears. Hearing rumours of great treasures in the ship, Daguzi boards the ship and goes missing. His son, Mantou, enters the ship to search for his father and embarks on a treacherous journey. Busifan constructs a fictional, but complex and richly imaginative world view. The film is an ensemble piece with many characters, which is how Busifan explores his views of the world at large, human nature and class identities. Despite its dark tone, the film is thoroughly captivating. The Storm is primarily hand-painted to fits its ink-style art design. The character designs are unique, and the appearance of the Monkey King is a major highlight.
